Lazy day at Stocking Island

Yay for lazy days!!!  Sometimes having nothing to do is fantastic!  However, when you suffer from FOMO, lazy days can turn into early mornings and/or late nights.  Today was another early morning but not a “watch the sunrise” early morning.  There is so much to see on the harbour I’m afraid I might miss something so it’s REALLY hard to sleep in.  Rosemary and I sat on the porch musing about the world’s problems for an hour or two and she offered to take me to the water taxi.  My plan for the day was to spend the morning and early afternoon on Stocking Island.  And that I did.  We made some stops in town at the grocery store and the hardware store so she could pick up a few things.  She was also looking for an artist that paints Bahamian scenery at the hardware store.  She just bought something from him but she feels like it’s “too stark” and “missing something”.  So she wants him to add a person or an animal to it.  LOL.  She cracks me up.  I’ve never met someone that would take a piece of artwork back to an artist and have them add to it.  She is a queen alright! 🙂  And I love her for it.

She dropped me off at the water taxi that goes to Stocking Island and I was about 15 minutes early so I just sat with the conch salad chef and the water taxi driver.  The conch salad dude was watching music videos on his phone.  First was Drakes Hotline Bling, then more Drake, then Omi’s Cheerleader, and on and on.  I couldn’t help but sing along.  I wonder if he is trying to learn the lyrics or watching the latest in sweet dance moves or what.  I suppose I’ll never know.  But I really want to.  I should have asked.  Whatever.  I hop on the taxi with two other couples and am immediately questioned by one of them about where I’m from, what I’m doing, am I alone, etc.  I get that a lot of that here but I’m happy to answer.  When we arrived at the island, they asked me for the lay of the land.  I put on my best tour guide hat and presented everything I knew including drink and food recommendations.  They said they found my calling.  Hmph.

I laid on the beach for quite some time and then hiked over to the ocean side for the first time and WOW was it gorgeous.  I am irritated that I can’t capture the colors and the beauty of this beach on film.  I’ve never seen anything like it. and I grew up on the beach.  Come 11:30 or so, it was time for food and drink.  So I headed to the bar and found my tour customers there.  And Shephard of course.  Haven’t seen my bartender buddy in a week so we caught up on the things I’ve accomplished this since I last saw him.  I chatted with Shephard and the couple about typical things you would discuss when meeting other American’s for the first time in a tourist destination.  You know, where are you from, what do you do, blah, blah, blah.  But they were super nice and bought my drinks!  Yesssss!!  Didn’t expect that one.  At $9 a piece, I’ll take what I can get!!!  We both headed over to the conch salad guy and watched in awe as our lunch was made.  Can’t get much healthier that conch salad people.  Nothing but fresh conch right out of the ocean and fruits and veggies.  I enjoyed every bit of it.  I even ate the pistol whip.  That’s the gooey noodle thing in the conch that apparently is an aphrodisiac.  Reynaldo said I’d be coming back to see him later.  Riiiiiiight.

Hard to beat this.

Walking to the ocean side of Stocking Island.

Unbelievably breathtaking.

A meal fit for a queen. Conch salad and Goombay Smash.

I also ran into my little British buddies I secretly and probably illegally filmed last week.  And I filmed them again of course (check it out on Facebook).  I get a kick out of them and their most adorable accents.  They were leaving today to go back home so I’m bummed I won’t get to see them again.  I also met a group of crazy crossfitters.  With man buns.  That’s the new thing I suppose.  Men with buns.  Ack.  No offense to those with them now but sheesh. Buns are for lazy women (like myself) and women in the military.  That’s it.  End of story.  Anyhoooooo, I discussed random topics with them and another nice couple for awhile and my water taxi driver came to the bar and gave me the “I’m ready to go” look.  So I quickly packed up and headed for the boat.

The taxi driver dropped me off at the dock in Georgetown and I headed for home on foot.  It’s only about a 10 minute walk, if that.  The bed was calling for a nap so I answered.  Woke up after the sunset so I didn’t get to see Rosemary but I see she is inside enjoying her BBC news on TV that she watches every evening.  Tomorrow starts a week with a friend of mine that is flying in around noon.  Lot’s of new territory to cover and many more pics and video to come!
